We’re Josh & Zara Jenkins
The proud duo behind Breakaway Pastures—a first-generation, veteran-owned farm located just 30 minutes outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Our farm’s main focus is on responsibly raising chickens for meat on our seven acres of pasture (no $2 million dollar commercial chicken houses here!). That means we want our chickens and land to be as healthy as possible and free from the chemical abuse of modern agriculture. We value bugs, weeds, and the diverse wildlife that lives at our farm. Our ultimate goal is for this farm to bring you closer to the source of your food. We strongly believe that communities should have the knowledge and resources to feed themselves and others wherever the land allows. If carrots can be grown in North Carolina soil...why are we trucking them all the way from California??
We're here to encourage a better way to participate in food. A purposeful BREAKAWAY from the modern convenience of faster, fatter, bigger, and cheaper...at the expense of animal welfare and our food's nutritional value.
Welcome to Breakaway Pastures!

How We Raise Our Chickens:
1.
We raise newly hatched chicks in our barn for 2 weeks, keeping them safe from predators and weather until they are old enough to go out to pasture.
2.
At 2 weeks old, we move our chickens out to our pastures where they can forage for bugs, grass, seeds, and lounge around in the sunshine.
3.
Every morning we move our chickens to a new area of pasture, so that they have fresh areas to forage and don’t oversaturate one spot of soil with manure.
4.
At 8 weeks old, we humanely process and package our chickens on-site ourselves through a poultry exemption license from the state of NC.

Our chickens live the majority of their lives outside in sunshine, instead of cramped commercial chicken houses

Our chickens are never debeaked, and are never given vaccines, injections, drugs, steroids, sprays, chemicals, or antibiotics

Our chicken’s diets are supplemented with carefully selected organic, non-GMO feed, milled right here in North Carolina

Our chickens are always under our direct care and supervision, and are never trucked off-site for processing or packaging

OUR
MISSION
-
To grow happy, healthy, and nutritious food
-
To create lasting relationships between consumers and farmers
-
To share with others the tools to build sustainable local food
Building Resilient Communities Through Local Food and Education
At Breakaway Pastures, our mission is to reconnect people with their local farmers and strengthen the food chain by bringing food production closer to home. We believe that a resilient food system starts with shortening the distance between farm and table, reducing dependence on industrial supply chains that can easily falter during global disruptions like pandemics.
When you know your farmer, you gain trust in the quality and integrity of your food. We believe that by fostering these direct connections, communities can create a more secure, sustainable food supply. Together, we can ensure that local farms thrive, keeping food fresh, nutritious, and close to home.
But we don’t stop there. We're passionate about teaching others how to raise their own food, sharing the knowledge and methods we use every day. By empowering more people to grow food in their own backyards, we help create a community-driven food network that’s stronger, more sustainable, and less vulnerable to external shocks.
Together, we can build a future where fresh, nutritious food is always within reach, and every community has the tools to feed itself.
